Meniscus Repair Trumps Partial Meniscectomy in Long-Term Knee Outcomes Post-ACL Reconstruction
15 May 2025 • Analyzing 39,000 patients, researchers found that meniscal repair at the time of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction significantly reduced the risk of revision surgery compared to partial meniscectomy (RR 0.78).
Repair was linked to a higher risk of meniscal reoperation (RR 1.26). Partial meniscectomy carried a striking sixfold increased risk of progressing to total knee arthroplasty (RR 6.4) compared to isolated ACL reconstruction.
The findings underscore the long-term joint-preserving benefits of meniscal repair in ACL-injured patients and highlight a particularly higher revision risk when medial meniscal injuries are involved.
