Surgery May Not Be Essential for Long-Term Survival in Pleural Mesothelioma

30 Jun 2025 • An analysis of over 21,000 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma showed no clear survival advantage with surgery over chemotherapy alone.

Among 2,045 long-term survivors (≥5 years), 35% had not undergone any surgical intervention.

In a propensity-matched cohort, 5-year overall survival was identical (16.4%) between patients who received chemotherapy alone and those who also underwent surgery, with median survival of 22.9 vs. 21.9 months, respectively.

These findings highlight the potential to achieve durable survival without surgery and underscore the need for better tools to personalize mesothelioma treatment strategies.
