Endometriosis Linked to Double the Risk of Autoimmune Conditions Within Two Years
27 Jun 2025 • Women diagnosed with endometriosis face nearly double the odds of developing autoimmune diseases within two years, according to an analysis of over 1.5 million patients.
The study found that 4.93% of women with endometriosis received at least one autoimmune diagnosis—such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or Sjögren’s syndrome—compared to just 1.42% in matched controls. The risk for myositis and Sjögren’s was especially high, with odds ratios up to 5.92.
Researchers urge further investigation into shared biological mechanisms and call for strategies to reduce diagnostic lags to better understand the interplay between these chronic conditions.
