Increased Risk of Type 1 Diabetes in Patients with Celiac Disease and Thyroid Disorders
30 May 2025 • Individuals with celiac disease, hyperthyroidism, or hypothyroidism face a markedly higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes compared to those without these autoimmune conditions.
Type 1 diabetes incidence was more than doubled in all three disease groups: 0.14% vs. 0.06% in celiac disease (HR = 2.54), 0.17% vs. 0.06% in hyperthyroidism (HR = 2.98), and 0.18% vs. 0.08% in hypothyroidism (HR = 2.41).
These findings underscore the importance of proactive screening for stage 2 type 1 diabetes in patients with autoimmune conditions to enable early intervention.
