Pregnancy Hypertension Flags Long-Term Cardiovascular Risk in Women with Type 1 Diabetes
16 Jun 2025 • A 27.9-year follow-up study found that women with type 1 diabetes who experienced hypertensive disorders in pregnancy faced significantly higher cardiovascular risk.
Key Findings:
- Pre-eclampsia conferred the highest hazard for cardiovascular events (HR: 5.07), followed by gestational hypertension (HR: 3.63) and chronic hypertension (HR: 3.45), compared to normotensive women.
- All-cause mortality was also elevated with pre-eclampsia (HR: 2.92) and chronic hypertension (HR: 3.31), though attenuated after adjusting for diabetic kidney disease.
Findings highlight the importance of long-term cardiovascular monitoring in this high-risk population.
