PDR Elevates Cardiovascular Risk in T2D with Highest Impact in Younger Patients
11 Jul 2025 • In a study of over 2 million people with type 2 diabetes, proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) emerged as a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.37, comparable to chronic kidney disease (CKD) at 1.36.
Risk was highest when both coexisted (aHR: 2.21), and particularly elevated in adults under 40 (aHR: 3.28).
Findings highlight the need to incorporate PDR into CVD risk models, especially for younger patients with T2D.
