Severe Neonatal Morbidity Predicts Sustained Mortality Risk Beyond the Neonatal Period
12 Jun 2025 • A study of over 2 million births found that infants with severe neonatal morbidity (SNM) had a 14-fold higher postneonatal mortality rate (1.81 vs. 0.13 per 1,000 person-years; aHR 5.92).
Neurological SNM posed the greatest risk (aHR 17.67). The impact was stronger in girls and term-born infants, with deaths spanning infections, respiratory, circulatory, and metabolic causes.
The study highlights the need for targeted prevention and long-term care.
