DASH4D: Low-Sodium Diet More Effective than DASH Alone in Managing Blood Pressure in Diabetes!
10 Jun 2025 • A new randomized crossover DASH4D (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension for Diabetes) trial involving adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension found that combining a DASH-style diet with sodium reduction significantly lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 4.6 mm Hg and 2.3 mm Hg, respectively, compared to a typical high-sodium diet.
Most of the BP drop occurred within the first three weeks, with sodium reduction emerging as the dominant driver over diet changes alone, even among those on multiple antihypertensives.
The findings underscore the clinical value of salt restriction alongside optimized dietary patterns in managing hypertension in diabetes.
