Early Hip Fracture Surgery Cuts Complications in Anticoagulated Elderly Patients
23 May 2025 • A decade-long study revealed that elderly patients (aged ≥65) with hip fracture on factor Xa inhibitors apixaban or rivaroxaban safely underwent surgery within 24 hours of admission without increased perioperative blood loss or transfusion risk.
Compared to delayed surgery (24-72 hours), early intervention led to lower preoperative blood loss (0.80 vs. 1.2 g/dL) and fewer 90-day complications (19.4% vs. 41.5%), without increasing mortality, reoperation, or 90-day readmission risk.
These findings support timely surgical intervention, even in anticoagulated geriatric patients, to reduce complications and hospital stay.
