First-Ever Detection of Microplastics in Human Ovarian Follicular Fluid

13 May 2025 • A groundbreaking study has revealed the first-ever detection of microplastics (MPs) in human ovarian follicular fluid. Analyzing fluid samples from 18 women undergoing IVF, researchers found MPs smaller than 10 µm in 14 out of 18 samples, with a mean concentration of 2191 particles/mL.

The MPs, measuring around 4.48 µm, were associated with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (p-value < 0.05). No correlation was observed with anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), fertilization outcomes, miscarriages, or live birth.
