PVT Significantly Elevates Risk of Variceal Hemorrhage in Cirrhosis
8 Jul 2025 • A 10-year study in cirrhotic patients found a strong link between portal vein thrombosis (PVT) and esophageal variceal bleeding (EGVB).
PVT significantly raised EGVB risk, with 61.4% of patients developing PVT before bleeding. EGVB occurred earlier (median 2 months) than PVT (16.9 months). Key predictors for both included enlarged portal vein diameter and low hemoglobin.
Findings highlight the importance of early PVT detection, portal pressure control, and anemia management to prevent life-threatening bleeding.
