OSA Extends Beyond Obesity: Heterogeneous BMI Distribution in a Large Meta-Analysis
23 Apr 2025 • In a large analysis of over 12,800 adults, 56.2% of participants had obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), only 25.7% had obesity, and just 31.5% of those with OSA were obese.
Key Findings:
- In contrast, 44.4% had an overweight status, and 23.5% had a normal or underweight BMI.
- Among individuals with obesity and overweight, OSA was present in 74.3% and 59.8%, respectively.
- The odds of OSA were significantly elevated in those with overweight (OR 2.18) and obesity (OR 4.84) compared to those with normal weight.
These findings underscore the need to broaden diagnostic vigilance and tailor treatment beyond weight-based assumptions.
