NMC Draft Regulations Open Door for Non-Medical Graduates to Teach Medical Subjects
21 Jan 2025 • The National Medical Commission (NMC) unveiled the draft "Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations" (TEQ-2024) on January 17, introducing pivotal updates to faculty qualifications and appointment criteria in medical education.
The draft permits non-medical graduates with relevant M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees to temporarily hold faculty positions. They may teach anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry to medical students during the transition period but are not eligible for administrative roles.
The draft also proposes smoother pathways for Indian MBBS graduates with recognized postgraduate qualifications from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. These individuals may be exempted from mandatory Senior Residency if they possess adequate teaching experience abroad and qualify for teaching roles such as Senior Residents or Assistant Professors in India.
