Increased Rates of Ocular Complications in Dialysis-Dependent Kidney Transplant Recipients
2 May 2025 • Patients who underwent dialysis before kidney transplantation face a significantly higher risk of long-term ocular, new research shows.
Dry eye affected 21.8% of dialysis patients versus 12% of those transplanted pre-emptively, while diabetic retinopathy occurred in 25.3% vs 16.2%, respectively. Rates of cataracts, glaucoma and others ocular conditions remained similar in both groups.
The findings pinpoint pre-transplant dialysis as a key contributor to post-transplant vision issues, underscoring the need for early ophthalmologic monitoring—especially in dialysis-dependent patients.
