Macrovascular Complications Surge with Rising TSH in Diabetic Patients
20 Feb 2025 • In type 2 diabetes patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), higher TSH levels were associated with a heightened risk of macrovascular complications.
Key Findings:
- Severe SCH was associated with a sixfold increased risk, while moderate SCH had a 4.35-fold risk.
- Complication rates were highest in severe SCH (90.5%), succeeded by moderate (80.9%) and mild SCH (59.9%).
- Severe SCH also correlated with higher odds of peripheral artery disease (OR: 5.91) and coronary artery disease (OR: 3.26).
- Older age and male sex further heightened risk.
- Given these findings, routine TSH monitoring in diabetic patients is essential to mitigate cardiovascular complications, especially in high-risk groups.
