Microvascular Burden Signals Macrovascular Risk in Type 2 Diabetes
2 Jul 2025 • A study of 4,527 adults with type 2 diabetes reveals a compelling link between microvascular disease (MiVD) burden and adverse macrovascular outcomes.
The incidence of stroke, myocardial infarction, or death rose markedly with increasing MiVDs—from 13.07 to 35.52 per 1,000 person-years across groups with zero, one, and two or more MiVDs, respectively.
Individuals with multiple MiVDs had a 73% higher risk of the primary outcome (HR: 1.73), and significantly elevated risks of stroke (HR: 2.61) and myocardial infarction (HR: 1.67).
These findings underscore the importance of aggressively managing microvascular complications to curb downstream cardiovascular risk in diabetes care.
