Impact of Body Mass Index on Mortality and Clinical Outcomes in Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis
7 Jul 2025 • In a study of 14,469 patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, underweight individuals had significantly higher 5-year mortality (24.3%) vs. normal BMI (15.3%; HR = 1.83).
In contrast, overweight (16.6%; HR = 0.77) and obese patients (16.8%; HR = 0.79) showed lower mortality. Underweight patients also faced higher risks of pneumonia, mycobacterial infections, ICU care, and ventilator use.
The study suggests a protective effect of higher BMI, highlighting the need for individualized nutritional management.
