Postoperative Hyperglycemia Worsens Survival in Non-Diabetic Gastric Cancer Patients
6 Jun 2025 • New research shows that postoperative hyperglycemia significantly worsens survival in non-diabetic gastric cancer patients undergoing curative surgery.
Elevated postoperative blood glucose (BG) was an independent predictor of poorer overall survival (OS), alongside age >65, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, visceral adipose tissue index (VATI), surgical approach, and pTNM stage. While higher VATI usually predicts better survival, its benefit was reduced by a −12.9% negative mediating effect of postoperative BG.
These findings highlight the critical role of glycemic control after surgery for improved long-term outcomes in gastric cancer.
