Prolonged Overweight Raises Relapse, Mortality Risk in Childhood ALL

16 May 2025 • A recent study found that prolonged overweight or obesity during treatment in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) was associated with poorer survival and higher relapse risk.

Children who were overweight or obese at two or more time points had lower three-year overall survival (93.8% vs. 98.9%) and event-free survival (80.0% vs. 93.7%) compared to those overweight or obese at no more than one time point.

They also experienced higher relapse rates (10.5% vs. 5.8%). Mortality risk more than tripled (HR 3.49), and relapse risk nearly doubled (HR 1.92). The findings emphasize the need for weight management strategies during ALL therapy.
