LUTS/BPH Risk Escalates with Rising Chronic Diseases in Men
7 May 2025 • A 7-year analysis of 5,197 men aged ≥45 revealed a clear, dose-dependent rise in lower urinary tract symptoms or benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) with increasing chronic illnesses.
Prevalence rose from 3.8% (no chronic disease) to 23.2% (≥3 conditions), with odds 2.18 times higher with one chronic disease, 3.16 with two, and 5.83 with three or more.
Men with multiple diseases (24.8%) had the highest LUTS/BHP rates, followed by those with heart-related (18.5%) and lung-related (17.8%) conditions. Adjusted odds remained elevated for those with lung or heart diseases (aOR 1.85 & 1.98, resp.).
Depression mediated this link, underscoring the need for integrated care addressing both physical and mental health in aging men.
