Sarcopenia Significantly Raises Long-Term Mortality in IBD Patients
25 Aug 2025 • A long-term study of 4,966 inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients (median follow-up 14.6 years) found sarcopenia to be a strong predictor of mortality.
Probable sarcopenia was present in 14.6% and confirmed in 0.7%, with mortality rates of 17.5% and 29.4%, compared to 11.4% overall.
Patients with probable sarcopenia had a 47% higher death risk (HR 1.47), while confirmed sarcopenia more than doubled mortality risk (HR 2.40).
These associations remained robust across sensitivity analyses, underscoring muscle health as a key prognostic factor and supporting routine sarcopenia assessment for risk stratification in older IBD patients.
