Extrapulmonary Chronic Cough Strongly Associated with Depression and Anxiety
11 Aug 2025 • An analysis of ~10,000 adults found extrapulmonary chronic cough (ECC) in 6.4% of participants, strongly linked to psychiatric comorbidities.
ECC was associated with higher odds of depression—1.7× for mild, nearly 2× for moderate, and 1.7–3.5× for severe—and almost double the risk of anxiety (OR 1.9), independent of demographics and comorbidities.
Findings highlight the importance of screening ECC patients for depression and anxiety, recognizing the likely bidirectional link between chronic cough and mental health.
