Cholecystectomy Elevates Risk of Fatty Liver Disease, Especially with Cardiometabolic Burden
4 Aug 2025 • A large study of 660,000+ individuals found that cholecystectomy increases the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) by 1.48 times.
The risk surges to 5.26-fold in patients with ≥3 cardiometabolic risk factors, while those with fewer than three face a modest 1.22-fold increase.
These findings underscore the need for targeted screening and cardiometabolic risk management before and after gallbladder removal.
