Staying Active After Knee Replacement Lowers Heart and Stroke Risk

4 Sept 2025 • A nationwide study found higher 5-year risks of cardiovascular (19.3% vs. 17.1%) and cerebrovascular disease (25.7% vs. 23.9%) in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) compared with controls.

Key Findings:

  • Moderate-to-vigorous activity ≥5 times weekly reduced cardiovascular risk by 8% (HR 0.918) and cerebrovascular risk by 11% (HR 0.890).
  • Previously inactive patients who became active gained significant benefit, while those who stopped exercising after TKA faced sharply increased cerebrovascular risk.

These results highlight the importance of maintaining or initiating regular physical activity after TKA to improve long-term outcomes.
