Autoimmune Disease and Elevated Lipoprotein(a) Additively Increase Cardiovascular Risk
15 May 2025 • New data from over 350,000 participants reveal that autoimmune conditions and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels independently raise the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
Key Findings:
- Among 11,229 individuals with autoimmune diseases, both autoimmune status (HR 1.30) and elevated Lp(a) ≥125 nmol/L (HR 1.24) were independently linked to MACE.
- Participants with both risk factors faced a 77% higher MACE risk (HR 1.77) compared to those with neither.
The additive impact underscores the need for targeted cardiovascular prevention, including exploring Lp(a)-lowering therapies in patients with autoimmune disease and elevated Lp(a).
