Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Elevated Lung Cancer Risk

30 Jul 2025 • In a study of 101,732 adults from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was linked to a 41% increased risk of lung cancer (HR 1.41).

Among 1,706 lung cancer cases, risk rose for both non-small cell lung cancer (HR 1.37) and small cell lung cancer (HR 1.44) in the highest vs. lowest UPF intake quartiles.

These associations remained significant after adjusting for smoking, diet quality, and other risk factors, highlighting UPF consumption as a modifiable contributor to lung cancer risk.
