Laparoscopy Lowers Risks in Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Placement

29 Aug 2025 • A meta-analysis of pediatric patients comparing laparoscopic versus open catheter placement for peritoneal dialysis showed that laparoscopy significantly reduced complications.

Key Findings:

  • Laparoscopic insertion lowered reoperation risk by 72% (OR 0.28) and peritonitis by 79% (OR 0.21), with overall outcomes favoring the minimally invasive approach (OR 0.55).
  • No significant differences were found for catheter migration, obstruction, infection, or leakage.

These findings support laparoscopy as the preferred technique for pediatric PD access, offering greater safety and reduced need for repeat surgery.
