Post-Diagnosis Depression in IPF Significantly Increases Mortality Risk and Impairs Treatment Uptake
30 May 2025 • A study of 31,386 idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients reveals that depression developing after IPF diagnosis is a serious clinical concern, significantly increasing mortality risk and reducing the likelihood of anti-fibrotic therapy initiation.
While only 6.7% of patients had depression at diagnosis, the post-diagnosis incidence surged to 32.4 cases per 1,000 person-years. New-onset depression after diagnosis more than doubled the mortality risk (HR 2.71).
These findings underscore the urgent need for proactive mental health screening and integration of psychological care into routine IPF management.
